Mas de la Serra
Hoteltyp: Boutique Hotel
Umgebung: Land
Anzahl der Zimmer: 8
Stil: Traditionell
You can almost describe the marvellous Mas de la Serra simply with words starting off with “M”: “Másia”, Mountains, Magnificent, Matarrana, Mediterranean hues… Magical!
It’s that sort of place and it is easy to see why Alasdair Grant (of the famous Scotch whisky family) fell in love with it after coming here on business some years ago and then decided to turn it into such an exceptional rural accommodation.
Now back to those “M” words:
Másia: The Mas the La Serra is a 17th century "Másia", basically a Spanish term meaning stone built farmhouse. What Alasdair has done with it is nothing short of spectacular. In restoring it to its former glory, he left the soul of the place intact but added cosmopolitan touches and pieces from his travels around the world and native Scotland. Phoenix like, the Mas de la Serra was transformed into a secluded, quixotic retreat.
Matarrana Mountains: Being in the heart of the Matarrana Mountains the Mas de la Serra rises above the untamed remoteness of the countryside of Teruel and it’s a beautiful sight to behold. At night, especially, with the lights on, it gives the impression of the place floating on air.
Mediterranean Hues: This area if often nicknamed as the “Tuscany of Spain” given the historic villages, sloping hills, vineyards and general love of good food here. But there’s also a strong Mediterranean element here. Decoration takes in many North African pieces and the cuisine is definitely Mediterranean in spirit.
Magical: The area around Mas de la Serra is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world. Mas de la Serra is bang in the middle of it all and adding this to the charm of the place, the authentic comfort it provides, good food, wine and outdoor pursuits. It all creates a magical exclusive hideaway
Mas de la Serra works really well as a place where friends and family come to relax, share meals and explore this beautiful part of the ‘real’ Spain. The accommodation has been designed to be the perfect location for a group to get together and chill or perhaps celebrate a birthday or have a special event.
NB. The entire property and garden has broadband wireless internet and twin rooms can be changed to doubles on request.

Information for families
Is the pool child safe?
The ininity pool is fenced of on the sides which are accessible. There is a gate to enter the pool area. Obviously if families bring very small children into the pool area they would have to be held by the parents. The pool is 1.5m deep and 5x 8m.
The pool has passed all the health and safety requirements for a public pool in Spain and there are also 2 life rings on hand.
Are there places to sunbathe and relax outside the pool area?
Yes. There are 5 further terraces and a front lawn. All the terraces are very safe for children in particular the walled patio which has many shady spots for most of the day, the gated patio next to the main sitting room is also a completely contained shady area.
How safe are the rest of the grounds?
There is no doubt that this is a wilderness area and children under 7 years should be monitored if outside the immediate grounds. For older children the whole area is great to explore.
Is there food for children at the ‘Masia’?
There is no problem for Jenny to give children a simpler meal earlier if requested. It would be useful to know at the time of booking what ages the children are and whether they eat the same food as the adults and whether they will all eat together or in 2 sittings as well as any allergies etc.
The local supermarket in Valderrobres will sell most common products for those cooking their own lunches. For very young babies it will be best to bring food with you unless you arrange for it to be bought in Spain by prior arrangement.
Is there enough to occupy children on a week / 2 week holiday at the ‘Masia’?
As one would expect there are many diferent activities depending on the ages of the kids. Jenny can also babysit for those that want to go of for lunch or in the evening to try a local restaurant.
The house itself is a bit like a labyrinth with no end of places to explore as well as the grounds and pool. For rainy days there are children’ games as well as plasma screens and a home cinema room. It is very easy to ind fossils throughout the farm and in September children can help with the almond harvest. Trule hunting can also be arranged.
It is quite easy to spot the Spanish Ibex in the mornings and evenings which are something between a goat and an antelope! There is a vulture feeding center and dinosaur center very nearby. There are several castles in the local villages and many local festivals depending on the time of year. Luis can advise on what events are on during your visit.
There are some amazing gorge walks where kids can swim in turquoise pools and there’s also water sports on the lake nearby as well as bathing in a wonderful waterfall. There is also a riding center for excursions into the hills and mountain bikes can also be rented.
Is there any nightlife?
The nightlife is surprisingly good though mainly on weekends and during village iestas. Again Luis can advise on where to go and which villages are in fiesta. Most of the nightlife is in Valderrobres and doesn’t really get going till very late. Trips in and out of Valderrobres can be
arranged with Luis at extra cost.
Is the house itself safe for children?
The house is a registered hotel in Spain so not just a normal house that you can rent so it has passed all the health and safety checks. Obviously the same precautions should be taken as when visiting any unknown property.
What children’s facilities are provided?
Cots / linen and high chairs are provided. Families should arrange car seats with the car hire company.
What is the accommodation like for kids?
Depending on numbers. Kids can have a twin room or if there are a lot of kids it is possible to create a children’s dormitory but this should be arranged prior to arrival.
Spain is a very child friendly country and kids are tolerated at almost all restaurants and it is common to go to a restaurant illed with kids even at midnight.
Finally don’t forget that in any emergency Luis has all the details of the local medical center and nearest hospital and can translate for you.
