If you want to get to know this enigmatic and pretty magical region of Portugal, then staying in a place like the Monte da Rosada is pretty much essential.
Located in Arcos, a small quiet village, near Estremoz, this well preserved old country house, which dates back to 1863, in fact, is as Alentejo as you can get. That means bright colours, simple tasty food, good wine and friendliness all round.
Of course, in this case, it helps to be located between the mountains and the coast, lying, as it does, southwest Portugal, away from the hustle but near the small town of Barão de S. João, one of the most typical rural parishes of the municipality of Lagos, and one which still retains its genuine characteristics.
Monte da Rosada, has also been recently renovated and being located within a 4 hectare space, replete with almond, fig, olive, carob and some other fruit trees, it is a place to sooth the soul.
The typology of the rooms varies: some come with private kitchen others share other common kitchen (outside). There are rooms for 1, 2 or 3 occupants as well as fully-equipped apartments for 4-8 people. Winter is equally attractive with the fireplace on, so don’t think this is a place for summer only (although the saltwater pool is a lovely place to make the most of the heat).
Children are also very welcome here. They will be fascinated by the cats and chickens and there’s even a small zoo some 2 km away.
In short, we love it.

Places
Serra D'Ossa, one of the few range of hills in the Alentejo, has a rich heritage historic monuments: Roman roads, temples and bridges, Gothic and Manueline (the Portuguese gothic characterstic of the age of discoveries, XV-XVI c.) edifications, baroque churches and palaces.
Aldeia da Serra:
Anta da Candeeira (Dolmen)
Redondo:
Igreja Matriz de Nª. Sº. Da Anunciação (church).
Arraiolos - The 14th-century castle seems overwhelmed by the town walls and looming 16th-century Igreja (church) do Salvador. Typically,as in the rest of this region, houses in Arraiolos are low and white, with a blue trim to ward off the devil. The principal sight in Arraiolos, however, is of women stitching at their bright wool rugs in the shadowy rooms behind the main street. The City Hall has a fine display of locally made carpets from different eras. It is the birthplace of Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira and home of the \" noiva de Arraiolos\" a legendary bride who took a fortnight to adorn herself only to appear at her wedding in a shepherd´s cloak.
Évora
Grandiose and UNESCO World Heritage town and capital of the Alentejo regions. Without doubt, one of Portugal's loveliest cities.
