This particularly attractive Alentejo accommodation opened its doors to the public at the end of 2010, but it has already gained rave reviews for its combination of traditional southern Portuguese ambiance and a certain oriental philosophy. Here, yoga and meditation are an important part of a stay.

Actually, come to think of it, this area of Portugal is a perfect complement to such a philosophy. The Alentejo is famous for its slow pace and just like in oriental meditation, the area values peace of mind and a certain “Zen”. Even the Portuguese themselves endearingly poke fun at the Alentejo for its sleepy, "other wordly", way.

In any event, the fusion at the Casa do Plátano is near perfect – a place to recharge the batteries par excellence. And what a place to do it – ample, comfortable and engaging - the nine rooms are all named after colours representing different energies, or “chakras”. For example:

Even breakfast has no time limit attached to it. Everyone is free to enjoy it at their own pace. Still, none of the above precludes free wifi in public areas, state of the art TVs, or 24 hour service.

So, all in all, you get the fusion of Alentejo, yoga philosophy, history and no small amount of sophistication.

A further plus point is the location in Arraiolos, one of the Alentejo’s most typical villages. In fact Arraoilos castle is only some 500 metres away.

Yoga

Yoga is a very old science, no one knows its origin speciﬁcally, though its influence comes from the Far East, in the ridges of the Himalayas, at the foot of the river Saraswati, between India and China. Many stories tell that the Yoguis were wisepeople and that their world was extraordinary. They were like children. Everything fascinated them: the shining stars, the high mountains, the wide rivers... These wise people were part of nature, they were nature.

The word Yoga means to unite. Yoga is a practice that aims to make our body healthy through the union of the several corporal plans: physical, mental, emotional and the energetic and spiritual plans. The beneﬁts of yoga are many; through the physical plan it gives well being, balance, ﬂexibility, strength and vitality; through the mental plan it makes our mind healthy, happy and positive, concentrated and controled; through the emotional plan it helps to free emotions, adjust them and control them achieving in this way peace and serenity; through the energetical plan, the chakra lines are
unlocked, allowing vital energy to ﬂow freely within our body; through the spiritual plan it enables self-development and self-realization of each human being.

There are several streams of Yoga, several schools, several methods, the Yoga we are going to practice is called Hatha Yoga. The Hatha Yoga is based on a system of exercises that works through physical postures "asanas", breathing exercises "pranyamas", and relaxing techniques "yoganidra". These exercises keep our body healthy and able to the practice of meditation.
